I Love My Dad is a side-splitting and terrifically touching true story about the revitalization of one father-son relationship, shared sincerely by James Morosini and featuring a phenomenal performance from Patton Oswalt.

Watcher

★★★★ Liked Rewatched

Watcher probably won’t have the lifespan of a “once-in-a-generation” film fest horror hit like Hereditary that completely redefines the genre and what it can do, but not every horror film has to. For what it is, Watcher is a stellar example of the “stalker” subgenre at its strongest and scariest, all thanks to the spellbinding style employed by writer-director Chloe Okuno and her team and wonderful lead work from the always-mystifying Maika Monroe.

Turning Red

2022

★★★★ Liked 1

Turning Red finds Pixar surveying some of its most mature subject matter yet while retaining its signature heart and humor, telling a tale as old as time of maturing and making peace with our personal quirks and simultaneously separating itself from similar stories with writer-director Domee Shi’s specific point-of-view, presenting this generation with yet another absurdist, amusing, and astonishingly artsy Pixar pleasure.

★★½ Rewatched

Alice’s scrambled screenplay results in scattered storytelling that rushes its lead character’s progression, but Keke Palmer’s persistently persuasive performance (somewhat) steadies the ship.

Scream radically reinvigorates the franchise in ferocious fashion, serving up spooky spectacle and masterful meta commentary on modern horror and fandom thanks to a sharp script that feels frighteningly “of the moment.”

Few film series remain this fresh after 26 years, but Scream’s still got it.
