Annette Bening & Julianne Moore, adopt me.
Mark Ruffalo, call me.
(This was literally such a damn delight and I’m so surprised we don’t talk about it more??? Rock-solid screenplay, electrifying ensemble cast, perfect combo of pathos and comedy, etc etc etc. Seriously, seek it out if you haven’t seen it.)
Granik’s storytelling here is just absolutely gripping. I love Leave No Trace, but this may just beat it out as my favorite work from her thus far. Also, it’s so easy to see how this launched Lawrence’s career - what a sensitive, stripped-down performance full of strength and sincerity. Honestly may be my favorite role of hers (as much as I unashamedly adore American Hustle and Silver Linings Playbook). God, I really hope Granik gives us another cinematic gift sooner rather than later.
Holy HELL.
A straight-up cinematic knockout of the highest order. This only got ONE Oscar nomination??? Should’ve seriously been at the front of the pack in Picture, Director, Actor (Gosling’s absolute best), Original Screenplay, and Editing. From start to finish, I was just wholly hypnotized. The way Cian structured this ruinous romance for maximum devastation by balancing both the highs and the lows so brilliantly is nothing short of stunning. I honest to God don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like it.
And now I’m literally so terrified of ever falling in love.
Rewatched ahead of News of the World’s release later this month (and the inevitable comparisons that will follow) to remind myself of how terrific this thing is. God damn, the Coens just handle tone better than anyone in the business.
Melissa Leo has Hailee Steinfeld’s Oscar.
Truly just one of the most creative and well-crafted cinematic constructions ever put to screen lol ???
This thing is a finely-tuned TRIUMPH with pitch-perfect pacing and no spare scene. It’s an honest-to-god miracle of the medium, and I feel beyond blessed that I got to watch it in a theater for the first time.
On to Tenet 😌
We have a little less than a month to wait until Nolan’s 11th feature film, Tenet, hits theaters (maybe lol), but to coincide with both that picture’s first release date and Inception's 10th anniversary, the seventh edition of “Flashback Films” is dedicated to revisiting Nolan’s bold and brilliant 2010 blockbuster and investigating its influence on innovation in cinema over the past decade!
