Pinocchio

1940

★★★½ Liked

Three years after the revolutionary Snow White Disney decided to adapt another classic Tale. The adaption of Pinocchio is beloved even today and I imagine the majority of people who know the story know it from this film, or at the very least this is the Pinocchio character that comes to mind when the name is uttered.

Carrying the torch forward for the winning Disney formula, Pinocchio has some great tunes in it with When You Wish Upon A Star becoming basically the main theme for Disney. It’s a great song, and I feel the others are too, even though they seem often forgotten in Disney’s arsenal. Sure the Donkey scene is still pretty horrific, this has a much darker tone than the preceding tone, and even that was pretty dark! It’s odd to see a company that is often accused of stagnating and being too friendly actually starting off with some dark imagery. I never feel it steps over the line though, it never scared me as a kid but I can imagine it might for some.

Pinocchio is great, again even today. It has a wholly unique look with very little rotoscoping which means it’s aged a lot better than Snow White. When push comes to shove I think I prefer the shenanigans of Snow White and the texture for the characters that film provides. Pinocchio feels a bit flat character wise, there’s a few more this time round and I don’t know they don’t stick out as much to me as the dwarfs. That aside, still great, still a classic. Pretty much the definition of timeless.
