Its so weird that Paul Bartel directed a second, cross contiental race film starring David Carradine just a year later, and the two are unrelated. Whereas Death Race 2000 takes place in the future of the year 2000 and is campy and gory. Cannonball does a similar thing but is based upon a real life race and takes place in the 1970's. It being contemporary loses a fair bit in all honesty, and Carradine was never the most interesting bit of Death Race 2000. Its special effects are impressive especially near the end, but honestly its pretty boring at times.
