Cannonball

1976

★★ Watched

Its so weird that Paul Bartel directed a second, cross contiental race film starring David Carradine just a year later, and the two are unrelated. Whereas Death Race 2000 takes place in the future of the year 2000 and is campy and gory. Cannonball does a similar thing but is based upon a real life race and takes place in the 1970's. It being contemporary loses a fair bit in all honesty, and Carradine was never the most interesting bit of Death Race 2000. Its special effects are impressive especially near the end, but honestly its pretty boring at times.

Black Panther

2018

★★★½ Liked Rewatched

Absolutley insane this doesn’t have an end credits scene that leads into Infinity War looking back. These phase 3 films also don’t hit quite as hard as they did the first time round. Again, looking back. Black Panther is a solid entry in the Marvel pantheon no doubt about it but it does have issues, some odd edits that literally happen on the last beat of sentences and a pretty dry second act are issues I had this time around. Even so Boseman was an incredible Black Panther, and the story and culture this is trying to talk into was and is an important one.

★★ 6

Ghost World just wasn’t for me. I really wanted it to be, the general premise and plot is interesting but I was put off by the films attitude. It feels like it’s being quirky for the sake of being quirky and I find its cynical look at the world unhelpful. It’s not trying to say anything or offer anything more than, lol people suck, lol teens weird right? You know what’s funny? The word masturbation. It just grew tired for…

Matt and Mara

2024

★★★½ 3

Matt and Mara is an understated film, and I think the description of the film doesn't really do it justice. If you've read it, its not really about a road trip, very little of the film takes place on a road trip. Matt and Mara is instead a basic tale of love in all its forms, marriage, friendship, parenthood etc. Matt and Mara obviously have history, but its probably just that, history. It explores these themes, hits some crecendos and…
