Time After Time

1979

★★★½ Liked

Aside from a few dated oof-inducing bits (gender politics have arguably changed as much between 1979 and today as they have between 1893 and 1979), this movie is a pretty solid watch almost 45 years later. It's competently shot, and it's got an impressive cast of leads. I must it, I was a little surprised at how adorable Malcolm McDowell was as a romantic lead, considering the other work in his oevre. For their parts, Mary Steenburgen's on-screen chemistry with McDowell helps accomplish that feat - from their first meeting, the thirst is palpable - and David Warner knows just how much menace and control to give Jack the Ripper in order to make him feel scarier than Alex DeLarge. Definitely worth a watch if you're curious about what Nicholas Meyer has done besides two of the better Star Treks.
