An amazingly pristine 35mm showing of this legendary film!

Nice time capsule of Chicago. I believe, the first shot is Halsted (IL 1) and Wrightwood looking North and many other scenes are on Halsted - possibly quite a few around Goose Island. Halsted's a fast street where it would be easy to move all your movie gear. Saw this when it premiered in '81 and didn't think much of it then but liked it a lot more this first re-watch. One of James Belushi's (chicagoland native) first roles. I think Mann opened up Chicago as a filming location with this one - Risky Business was two years later with Tangerine Dream as well.
One thing about this movie is that Lumet who's been around since the 50s makes this thing that has nothing at all to do with the 50s.
Also, not to denigrate the casting there but I see lots of similarities here between Al Pacino and Dustin Hoffman and I think that the latter could have played this role just as well.
Edit: there's one scene though that Hoffman could not do as well as Pacino - and that's that first scene where Pacino confronts the crowd and gets them on his side. Pacino has always had more manic energy than Hoffman.
