incredibly shot, absolutely gorgeous film with such unexpected laughs, and that photobooth scene is truly such a riot — unfortunately also reaches a level of misogyny that packs a double punch:
the first is how every single element of Layla’s character (a 14 year old girl played by a 17 year old Christina Ricci, whose mother was not allowed with her on set) is steeped in incel sexist bullshit. whether she’s made to be the slut, the wife, or the mother, layla’s happy to play whatever part billie wants her to play, and his abuse endears him to her even more. there’s probably backstory to that, right? a reason a teenage girl might be so insistent on loving a man twenty years her senior? guess we’ll just have to assume so bc as far as this film is concerned, layla was born the day she meets billie. she was born to play the good wife, the naive seductress, and to put on a cardigan and play mommy to her 37 year old costar, holding him to her chest. she is understanding and patient and empathetic and she loves him and she is his girlfriend and she is fourteen years old.
the second punch is realizing vincent gallo wrote, directed, and starred in this — and handpicked christina ricci for the role after seeing her in THE ADDAMS FAMILY.
