Rafael "Mister Movie" Jovine’s review published on Letterboxd:
The original film adaptation is one of those films I the (really cool and catchy) title, but for the life of me, I couldn’t tell you a thing or two. But apparently I liked it. Anyways, as probably a lot of those who came into this series were all hooked by that awesome trailer with Radiohead playing in the background. It looked slick and Redmayne looked like he would nail the cold-blooded, slick hitman and Lynch also seemed like she would make for a great agent that will prove to be a challenge of sorts for our antagonist.
And all of that proved to be true. The opening song flawlessly encapsulates the two genres at the forefront of the series: the spy and thriller genres. The music has this Bond-esque quality that at first may come as unfitting considering the premise, but it immediately makes all the sense and, again, feels very fitting to the overall show. Some great direction and cinematography. There’s nothing groundbreaking about it, but, again, it all looked really slick and “classy.”
The acting is overall great. Redmayne has proven to be capable of playing this man with questionable remorse. I say “questionable” because through the writing and his performance, through this mask of sociopathy, there are glimpses of something resembling a humanity. Unfortunately, his darkest impulses push him away from the light. The scene with the couple in the RV could serve as an example. Lynch is great; the whole thing with her family was nice at first but it became a little redundant, though I liked how it tied up with this whole theme of family and how both wrestle with balancing their jobs with their lives, in which lives get lost. The argument would be that one is in the name of “justice,” while the other is in service of corruption. Though as the series unfolds, we see how the line between the two becomes thinner and thinner.
All in all, if you are a fan of the genre and looking for something great and pretty exciting to watch, I’d say it is definitely worth a watch.
