The Devil All the Time

2020

★★★

"Some people are born just made to be buried."

Didn't really think I was going to like this but man, but I was pleasantly wrong. What Campos has done is make an ambitious expansive elegiac Cormac McCarthy-esque portrait of fanaticism and the never-ending cycle of hubris and violence. I fawn over films and narratives of this type in this setting and in this tone even though its nihilistic narrative is borderline cartoonish and overdone at times.

The ensemble is across the board great as well. Many people give in their best work today. Pattinson will get the most press for his showy turn but it really is Holland (someone I've been very hard on) who owns this show. Even at it's 140 min. runtime, this thing moves well and keeps engaged in its twisty and stomach-churning ways up the point where Campos and co. tie it all together neatly in the end.
