Michael Boehnlein’s review published on Letterboxd:
Dang, I don’t think I stopped laughing the entire movie.
Everything was so perfectly overt, I wasn’t ready for it. Details like the principal calling the “two ugly lesbians” to his office over the intercom, or a random poster in the hallway showing a sexualized student with the message of “you’re prettier when you smile.” Everything came together to form this hilarious and refreshing world that’s truly unique.
Sennott and Edebiri were fantastic leads, and for 28 year olds, they play awkward high school students surprisingly well!
The whole cast was fantastic, honestly, but Marshawn Lynch stole every single scene he was in. He crushed it in Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Murderville, and now with Bottoms, it really feels like he’s on track to be the next Dave Bautista.
“I’m not stupid, OK?! I just look like this!”
Like, I don’t know how much of his lines were improvised, but his delivery never failed!
Ultimately, Bottoms is Seligman’s announcement to the world that there’s a new player in the game, and I’m really excited for what she does next. I will definitely be watching Shiva Baby soon.
