This was thoroughly able. Fantastic performance by Sally Hawkins. Not particularly scary or tense. I appreciate the casting of a blind actress in a blind roll. I think this film needed to do something more to stand out from the endless stream of horror recently. Maybe make some of the scenes from a blind perspective where audience’s only clue as to what is happening comes from audio and highly blurry visuals. But then it would have been compared to Hush. I don’t know, it was alright but I wasn’t that scared or impressed.
In true Scott fashion, the plot and characterization here fall painfully short of the epic premise and visual scale. The directors cut was a slog of a watch at over 3 hours. One of those stupid stories where the hero is just handed the queen’s love and the army and the kingdom, only because he’s handsome and stoic and exists as a proxy for male audience fantasies, just to turn it all down because he’s too morally principled and Christ-like…
What a tedious, hideous, irritating, arrogant, and deeply insecure film. It’s the film equivalent of the creepy boomer uncle who is unable to cope with his own sexual irrelevance, who is prone to harassing much younger women and ranting incoherently about conspiracies and technology and women’s bodies.
I wish I was joking when I say the 60+ year old protagonist grieves his chronically naked much younger wife’s death by fucking her twin sister who has a fetish for listening to…
Relentless groan inducing juvenile humor, obnoxious archetypical characters in a romance devoid of any chemistry, constant irrational decision making from every character, a ridiculously nonsensical villain reveal, and plot armor so thick that the leads dodge at least 100 knife swings each. This genre blend up shit show hits all of the worst tropes from the slasher and rom-com genres. Maybe it could have worked as a parody if it had managed to land a few of its jokes, but it is painfully unfunny. Two stars for a few fun kill scenes, snappy pacing and decent production design. Corniness overload.
