I've been curious about watching this for several years to see if it fits in with the doomed lovers subgenre that I love but it does not. It's phony and shrill.

It did occur to me that there might be something punk about the way it offends the senses but there's not enough here to merit that reading.

Even more stuffy and tedious than I ed. Well-produced sure, but Mike Leigh's Oscar bait moment just isn't for me. I liked the bits from the Cape Feare episode of The Simpsons which is of course my main reference point for Gilbert & Sullivan. That may explain my reaction.

Much too 'aw gee whiz mister' for me. It is splendidly shot, but it's all for the sake of posturing even if Henry Fonda brings appropriate gravitas to the role.

A vital antidote while I'm in the middle of my Mad Men marathon.

Like The Emigrants, it improved in the second half. I was very intrigued in how it took on Native Americans and was pleased we got to see Robert's journey to California, but otherwise I had similar issues as I had for the first. Way too much religious stuff.

I usually love immigrant stories but I found the docu-style difficult to digest. It did get better in the second half once they were on their way.

honestly kinda refreshing to watch an american classic where i wasn't very familiar with the cast. delightful.

A good start to my batch of Criterion blind buys. Gets a bit unfocused every now and then but when it’s sharp it’s so profound and immediate.

Yes the recent Albert Brooks documentary put me in the mood for this, yes he's easily the best part of it.
