Powerful imagery while the drama keeps its distance.

Yeah, anyone coming into this blind would hate this. I dug its vibe and existential moments. The connective tissue is sparse.

One Night in Miami...

2020

★★★★ 4

I wasn't sure how I felt about the film but it certainly gets better as it goes along. The first third was much too listless, kind of just killing time. It starts to find its magic in the middle third when they're all together, then delivers on the emotion and resonance tenfold in the last third.

There's something reflective in the way the film is about the responsibility of powerful black voices and how that's coming from Regina King that's…

Shiva Baby

The confidence and multi-tasking is impressive. I could have gone for another 15-20 minutes, but it's rare to get a 70 minutes movie that feels full.

The Lie

★★★ 1

I petsit for the director so I'm gonna rate Veena's doggos.

Hipster - 13/10 hungry boy
Rambo - 14/10 loyal boy
Chewie - 12/10 cute boy

And an honourable mention to Luca the chill cat.

The film is ok.

American Murder: The Family Next Door

2020

★★★½ 3

I just want to thank Netflix for making this 80 minutes long and not as a four-hour miniseries. I haven't been able to stand any true crime docies since OJ Made in America. So much filler.

I Carry You with Me

2020

★★★½ Watched

I'm certainly on board with being impressed by how it weaved fiction and documentary but it otherwise didn't quite hit the spot again after the first 20 minutes or so.

A shitty streamer at NYFF didn't help the experience either.

Dick Johnson Is Dead

One of the best most personal treatises on mortality and the importance of diaries. Sometimes confronted head-on, sometimes completely incidental. To be honest, Cameraperson did little for me, but I loved this.

On the Rocks

Well, I liked the music.

Me and You and Everyone We Know

I'm glad I didn't watch it before Kajillionaire because this brand of quirky is not my jam.

Kajillionaire

★★★★ Liked 1

Its quirkiness (read: contrivances) may put off some, but this was totally my jam. Exuberant, colourful, and full of equals parts heart and anguish. It may be a case study for an invented situation, but the writing is creative and the cast do a terrific job of humanizing their characters.

Never Rarely Sometimes Always

A survival story that hits you right in the sleep deprivation.
