I was reluctant to watch this one and even more hesitant to rave about it, but man, it's really my bag. I love these types of Americana stories where self-destructive people punish themselves over futile ego-driven goals (see: Whiplash, The Wrestler, All That Jazz, etc), especially when the approach is autism-coded like this. I found his inability to regulate his emotions and connect with others much more interesting in this lens than just thinking about them in simple of violence and loneliness. Those are colossal meltdowns and bodybuilding is basically Killian Maddox's special interest.

Of course, Jonathan Majors often imbues that kind of neurodivergence and physicality into his performances, thinking even to the first time I saw him in The Last Black Man in San Francisco. He deserves to lose his award campaigns, but it's hard to deny how what we know feeds into the subtext of the film, from the inner conflicts to the themes of legacy. I'm not going to conflate my comion for Killian with empathy for Jonathan though. I don't know what he's really like. All the best to his victims in their pursuit of justice.

The second season of The Rehearsal put me in the mood for a rewatch of Nathan For You, which I've just concluded with my sixth viewing of the feature-length series finale. This week's episode, where Nathan discovers he's accidentally an autism authority, moved me deeply. It did a profound job summarizing why both shows articulate autism-coded behaviour in a way that resonates with people, plus a bit on why autism acceptance is tough (he'll cross that bridge later).

The primary symptom of autism that it delved into is masking, which a lot of high-functioning people on the spectrum go through in their day-to-day finding it particularly draining to fit into society. It's easy to think you're just an introvert. When you're expected to behave or react in a certain way and you'd find it easier just reading off a script or taking complete control over the social situation, it feeds into a lot of anxiety. And life would be better if you got to rehearse every scenario in a consequence-free zone until you've perfected your mask.

That's what I find so fascinating about Nathan for You in how Nathan dives headfirst into those fears. The essence of the show is the humanity you find between those moments before you know what mask to be wearing. The awkward gaps where you don't quite know what to say or what the other person expects of you yet. Most shows edit those bits out since they set a strange tone, but this show finds them more interesting than anything someone might have prepared to say.

While that helps conquer reasons to avoid experiences, what the show also practises is a form of radical acceptance. The words "oh okay" are basically a catchphrase, both from Nathan and totally unprompted from participants as well. Even if something somebody says or does is totally weird or not that impressive, the other person tends to acknowledge it and move past the temptation to challenge what happened. It's primarily conflict-averse, but it also gives an opportunity to drop the pretence of masking and just be themselves. Every use of "oh okay" is unexpectedly funny and also a huge relief.

Now, these are two things that I noticed are also present in Finding s in a very different way. Here we see how it's a natural habit that elderly people have when it comes to interacting with each other to embrace and accept those odd fumbles. So, there might be a lot of cringeworthy comedy in the eccentric things people say or do and maybe we do see a side of people that feels more real, but perhaps there's a lot of wisdom we can learn from granting that type of grace more often. You might just get more out of life if you do.

Very keen for a revisit because I was having a hard time that week (as grateful as I am to attend such an advanced screening) so I couldn't fully absorb it on one go. It seems that Wes made it this way intentionally. I agree with the consensus so far that it's lower tier Wes but even that means it's an all-time favourite for me. It's super entertaining and existential, though lacks the emotional core that attaches me to his other films. However, there's a part of me that just loves seeing Wes paint another on his great tapestry. We'll take a step back one day and be blown away by the body of work, in the same way I look at my lovely boxset of Roald Dahl books and smile. It's simply a perfect filmography with a lot more to come.

La Haine 2i48q 1995 - ★★★★★ https://letterboxd.cinevost.com/jack/film/la-haine/8/ letterboxd-review-883629197 Fri, 9 May 2025 15:51:12 +1200 2025-05-08 Yes La Haine 1995 5.0 406 <![CDATA[

So, last night I got to see La Haine on 35mm for its thirtieth anniversary and I was thinking the whole time that it might just be my favourite movie. I got to see a D at Vidiots two years ago, but it never felt more like a classic movie to me than seeing its stark grit on nitrate. It had rocketed to my number one spot when I first saw it at 14 and it stayed as my #1 through the rest of 2007 until I saw The Assassination of Jesse James.

That internal debate quickly became irrelevant when ten minutes after the movie ended I tripped on the sidewalk, scared the shit out of my friend, and left the never broken a bone club. It’s just a radial fracture, but yeah, this is gonna suck. And then all I thought about was getting home and putting on my Criterion 4K of La Haine for another round.

Even after over twenty-five viewings, I get more out of the film every time. For last night’s watch, I thought about the meaning of Grunwalski (eh, things could be worse), the meaning of motherfucker (a disregard for your mother’s love when they’re wasting you), the id/ego/superego dynamic of our primary trio, and most importantly, the power of cameras, imagery, and representation. It’s the way we see the world and ourselves. That’s the universal magic of cinema, even from news footage.

I’d write the full essay if I had both hands ready, and then we’d be 5,000 words down before I even got to its forever-relevant police oppression narrative. When I have a film like this that I understood it on a primal level as a teenager and on an even deeper level in my thirties, I just know it’ll mean more to me as I get older and wiser and continue to look to La Haine to recapture a youthful spirit. Even on a bare surface level, it’s a tragicomic masterpiece with a banger soundtrack that has the greatest shot you’ve ever seen in your life every other scene.

What most stuck with me is an early scene during Hubert’s intro. He its that he knew his gym would go up in smoke, so Sayid asks why he even bothered running it, and Vinz answers that he just wanted to, it was worth it to him. All buildings crumble, all marriages part, all folks die, all empires fall. From stardust we came, to stardust we go. So, why go on living in the face of existential doom? Because it’s worth it.

Perhaps instead, it is the fall that matters. It depends on what you call the landing. It could be when I was face down on the pavement last night, or it could be when I picked myself up, put my sling on, and spent yet another cosmic night in Paris.

Or maybe we’re all still falling.

Letterboxd’s Top 50 of 2025 — Updated Weekly 1z6i1r https://letterboxd.cinevost.com/jack/list/letterboxds-top-50-of-2025-updated-weekly/ letterboxd-list-60555410 Tue, 11 Mar 2025 08:38:27 +1300 <![CDATA[

To be updated on Mondays. It's ranked by avg l.b. rating, extracted from here.

Includes documentaries and festival films of 2024 that have their first national release in 2025 (i.e. The Life of Chuck, Friendship). Note: I only include confirmed 2025 releases, not generally undistributed 2024 films. Films can be added upon the official announcement of their release date. The list does not include films that had some national releases in 2024 but U.S. releases delayed for 2025 (i.e. I'm Still Here).

There is a 1,000-watch minimum threshold for any films to be eligible and films need a 'trusted' average rating (i.e. a rating not hidden from the page) before they enter the list. For a version of the list without documentaries and a lower minimum, see Rahat's roundup.

Further exclusions:
• Short films, TV specials, concerts, stand-up specials, live theater and web videos. Films need a valid IMDb and TMDb page.
• TV miniseries or making of featurettes, unless they had theatrical distribution.
• Music-adjacent documentaries are excluded unless they have a film festival premiere. They are prone to fan manipulation.
• Films that extend or conclude narratives from TV shows despite a theatrical release. Prequels, spin-offs, or standalone films are allowed.

See the Letterboxd Official tag for my other 'official' year lists. Each list concluded shortly after their respective Oscar ceremonies so their ranking is a permanent time capsule. More member-curated official all-time lists are found on the Letterboxd 'Official' List Network. This list will conclude the week after the Academy Awards.

Special credit to Mihir Nanda for sourcing additional eligible films.

This one. I have it in my bedroom, but I noticed it’s typically used in kitchen or office sets. Now seeing PUGG in a movie takes me right out of the scene — I’m like, “I know him!”

It’s more common in TV shows, you see it everywhere, but I haven’t tracked episodes yet. See notes for screenshots. Slight variations in the color etc are okay, as long as it has the distinctive font and no second hand. The list is chronological by the time on the clock, notwithstanding before and after noon. This generic clock transcends space and time.

Ranked by average rating. The list was extracted largely thanks to this megalist of films directed by Black directors. It will be updated on a monthly basis and is an official list progress project on all-time stats pages for Pro and Patron . (See all films that have entered.)

~~

ELIGIBILITY RULES:

• This list includes Black co-directors or any Black directors on a diverse team.
• Films must be feature-length (more than 40 minutes), with a theatrical and/or festival release.
• Documentaries of any kind, short films, theater/stage, TV movies, TV series or miniseries, and episodes are excluded.
• There is a 1,000 minimum ratings threshold.

This list is by no means a definitive canon of Black directors in film history. This is merely a consensus list based off a specific criteria. It is, indeed, the tip of the iceberg. Please feel free to let me know any movies I've missed that fit the criteria or of any movies that do not belong. Please also feel free to recommend any films that need discovering.

It will be updated on a monthly basis and is an official list progress project on all-time stats pages for Pro and Patron . (See all films that have entered and a version with popular films only.)

~~

ELIGIBILITY RULES:

• This list counts female co-directors, even if uncredited. The developers are considering a design change so that they can be credited on the main page instead of just the crew tab.
• Includes cis, transgender and female-identifying directors. Trans women are women, no examples necessary.
• Films must be feature-length (more than 40 minutes), with a theatrical and/or festival release.
• Documentaries of any kind, short films, theater/stage, TV movies, TV series or miniseries, and episodes are excluded.
• There is a 1,000 minimum ratings threshold.

––

NOTABLE INCLUSIONS:

• The #1 on the list, City of God was co-directed by Kátia Lund. However, Lund was snubbed for the Academy Award while only Fernando Meirelles was nominated due to their rules about director teams. Meirelles and Lund worked together closely, directing the short Golden Gate in 2001 together as a test run for City of God. They then collaborated on the City of Men TV series adapted from City of God where she directed four episodes.
• Werckmeister Harmonies and The Turin Horse were co-directed by Béla Tarr's wife and editor Ágnes Hranitzky. The credit developed because of the extent Hranitzky had to be on set to assist Tarr with the timings of his long takes in order to match other shots. She edited all his films since 1981 but the credit only began in 2000. I am not mistaking Béla to be a woman.
• Slumdog Millionaire is co-directed by Loveleen Tandan. While she did not receive an Oscar nomination, she does get a title card right after Danny Boyle.

• No behind-the-scenes featurettes unless theatrically distributed, even if feature-length (featurettes are marked as 'Video' on IMDb, such as 'making of' docs).
• In an attempt to combat unintentional fan manipulation, all music-adjacent films must have screened at a film festival to qualify.
• No standup comedy marked as a documentary, nor any stage shows. Exceptions may be made for borderline exceptions.
• Skateboarding compilations are excluded.

The previous film released by the director of the Palme d'Or winner at the Cannes Film Festival from 2024 to 1949 (excluding shorts, TV, and contributions to anthology films).

Most directors earn a place in competition through a well-established filmography, often building momentum by picking up smaller prizes before they win the Palme d'Or. A few directors win the big one twice in a row and a few directors seem to come from nowhere.

Directorial debut films that won the Palme d'Or:
Sex, Lies and Videotape (1989), directed by Steven Soderbergh.
• The Long Absence (1961), directed by Henri Colpi.
• The Silent World (1956), directed by Jacques Cousteau & Louis Malle.
• Marty (1955), directed by Delbert Mann.

Read the notes for the winning directors, as well as other related Cannes precursors worth noting. The list doesn't necessarily contain their most acclaimed or notable work before winning the Palme d'Or but the listed film is the winner's most immediate predecessor.

  • No Bears

Directed by Jafar Panahi before winning for A Simple Accident (2025).

  • Red Rocket

Directed by Sean Baker before winning for Anora (2024).

Red Rocket played in competition for the Palme d'Or in 2021.

  • Sibyl

Directed by Justine Triet before winning for Anatomy of a Fall (2023).

Sibyl played in competition for the Palme d'Or in 2019.

  • The Square

Directed by Ruben Östlund before winning for Triangle of Sadness (2022).

The Square also won the Palme d'Or in 2017.

  • Raw

Directed by Julia Ducournau before winning for Titane (2021).

Raw won the FIPRESCI Prize at Directors' Fortnight or Critics' Week in 2016.

  • Okja

Directed by Bong Joon-ho before winning for Parasite (2019).

Okja played in competition for the Palme d'Or in 2017.

  • The Third Murder

Directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda before winning for Shoplifters (2018).

  • Force Majeure

Directed by Ruben Östlund before winning for The Square (2017).

Force Majeure won the Un Certain Regard in 2014.

  • Jimmy's Hall

Directed by Ken Loach before winning for I, Daniel Blake (2016).

Jimmy's Hall played in competition for the Palme d'Or in 2014.

  • Rust and Bone

Directed by Jacques Audiard before winning for Dheepan (2015).

Rust and Bone played in competition for the Palme d'Or in 2012.

From memory, I'll it I'm very hazy between 2000-2002 though 2006-2009 should be solid. I always being so swept up by Big Fish and that's when I started catag every film I saw in the cinema by hand. I wish I still had that piece of paper.

Babel was the first grown-up film I saw in theaters, it was early 2007 and I was 14 and I went in blind. I started going to film festivals from 2008 and you can see my taste mature from there. But alas, I lived in England at this time, so a lot of the biggest and best films didn't come near me. A lot of the Oscar movies don't come out until February or March.

I really can't what I saw in the cinema in the 1990s, we watched a lot at home. I seeing Antz for my birthday and I probably saw The Phantom Menace. Maybe Toy Story, The Lion King and the first Pokemon movie. Hard to say. I was easily spooked.

I'm only including films where I have a strong recollection of seeing them in cinemas, there are some big ones where I'm not sure if I'm mixing it up with a VHS rental viewing. This is sorted by Letterboxd premiere date, so it's not exactly the order I saw them.

Letterboxd’s Top 50 of 2024 31585t https://letterboxd.cinevost.com/jack/list/letterboxds-top-50-of-2024/ letterboxd-list-44404681 Tue, 19 Mar 2024 12:22:45 +1300 <![CDATA[

The list was updated weekly and ranked by avg l.b. rating, extracted from here.

Included documentaries and festival films of 2023 that had their first national release in 2024 (i.e. Problemista, Sing Sing). Note: I only included confirmed 2024 releases, not generally undistributed 2023 films. Films can be added upon the official announcement of their release date. The list did not include films that had some national releases in 2023 but U.S. releases delayed for 2024 (i.e. The Taste of Things, Perfect Days).

There was a 1,000-watch minimum threshold for any films to be eligible and films needed a 'trusted' average rating (i.e. a rating not hidden from the page) before they enter the list.

  2. Dune: Part Two
  3. I'm Still Here

The Almost Best Picture Winners 186p2h Ranking 2024 Oscar Nominees 3s366t https://letterboxd.cinevost.com/jack/list/ranking-2024-oscar-nominees/ letterboxd-list-58102899 Sat, 1 Feb 2025 21:00:29 +1300 <![CDATA[

2024 Ranked & Rated

Completed all feature nominees!

Best Picture:
01. The Brutalist — This is one of those years where there's only one film that I feel deeply about in the Best Picture lineup. And it's a real all-timer.
02. Anora — It got a bit overhyped for me so I've been focusing on its flaws, but when I look at the rest of the lineup it's clearly one of the strongest here.
03. Nickel Boys — A great nomination though a shame it still underperformed. Either this, A Real Pain or Sing Sing would be around the top four too.
04. I'm Still Here – Super inspired choice and worthy of this spot.
05. Wicked — It speaks a lot to the low quality of the year that this is in my top 5. It was good, I enjoyed it, but it would be an incredibly overrated winner.
06. The Substance — A very flawed film that's also an awesome nomination. Well done Mubi.
07. Dune: Part Two — I just can't get excited about this one.
08. A Complete Unknown — Fine but bland.
09. Conclave — Hard to get mad about, it's just predictable and tedious.
10. Emilia Pérez — Easy last place here even if I don't hate it as much as others.

Prediction: Look, this is a real easy category to overthink. People are resisting the idea of The Brutalist winning and I'm not sure why it seems out of the question. It's the one that seems the most like a Best Picture and I think it'll go hand in hand with Best Director. It reminds me of The Shape of Water or Birdman's years with also competitive lineups. I'll re-evaulate my prediction if Corbet loses steam. A lot of the other ones have pathways, so I'm not ruling any scenario out. Even the dreaded Emilia Pérez which I expect to take SAG. The Brutalist will likely win DGA and BAFTA, so PGA is the big test. Edit: By the time I wrote the previous paragraph, it looked like Anora had burnt out. After CCA, DGA and PGA, it's undeniable that it's our Best Picture. I had a feeling this season might be less engaged in general so voters would go with the early frontrunner and not overthink things (ala 2020), but I do wonder if it resonated more after the LA fires in the way Anora lives the high life then loses everything. In any case, there's only one film I prefer so I'm fine with it if it's not The Brutalist. I don't know what other awards it wins, at least one other (still thinking screenplay), could be 2 to 5. I still think The Brutalist wins 3 or 4.

Best Director:
01. Brady Corbet — Best of decade contender.
02. Sean Baker — Not his best but worthy of celebration.
03. Coralie Fargeat — Her direction was always the strongest part of the movie.
04. James Mangold — Studio journeyman.
05. Jacques Audiard — Would have been right at home here 20 years ago.

Prediction: This should be Brady Corbet's to lose unless something awful happens (read: Audiard).

Best Actor:
01. Adrien Brody — I forgot that he had it in him. I was floored.
02. Colman Domingo — Powerful, sensitive work.
03. Ralph Fiennes — He's given better in the past 20-odd years since his last nomination but this is solid for sure.
04. Timothée Chalamet — I get that it's kind of Bob Dylan's deal but I found him way too aloof for me.
05. Sebastian Stan — Yes, he gets how to do Donald Trump, but I got tired of it really quickly. He would be an easy #2 if this nomination was for A Different Man instead.

Prediction: I don't buy Chalamet as a threat to Adrien Brody. It's a hard race to read because so many Chalamet fans are rooting against The Brutalist. Can you blame them?

Best Actress:
01. Fernanda Torres — So happy she got in. Towering work. The only better nominee would have been Marianne Jean-Baptiste, but I didn't want to get my hopes up.
02. Mikey Madison — She's great and I'd be happy with her as a hip ingénue winner though she doesn't compare to the heights of Michelle Yeoh and Emma Stone in the past two years.
03. Cynthia Erivo — Yeah, she knocked it out of the park, though she wouldn't make my personal top 5.
04. Karla Sofía Gascón — Quite powerful at times, I don't begrudge the nom. (Edit: I do now after the Tweets)
05. Demi Moore — Very hit-and-miss, sometimes she's great and sometimes she's straight-up bad. I think a lot of fans enjoy it in a campy way though.

Prediction: I had thought that Mikey Madison had this sewn up so without her as a top contender I'm a bit at a loss. It could go either way in any direction. I'm not convinced by Demi Moore, perhaps if she wins SAG. I'm going to the trend of people with a gut feeling for Fernanda Torres. If you see I'm Still Here then she wins your vote, though not to continue a trend of picking my personal choice so far.

Best ing Actor:
01. Guy Pearce — Astonishing balance between charisma and caricature.
02. Kieran Culkin — Yeah I love Succession.
03. Edward Norton — Sure, he's good at doing a Pete Seeger.
04. Yura Borisov — I struggle to get excited about him when he doesn't deliver until the last moment.
05. Jeremy Strong — Again, same as Stan. Good but hard watch.

Prediction: This one's easy as Kieran Culkin has it locked. I do wonder how much goodwill comes from Roman Roy and he wouldn't get that push without that afterglow either. On the other hand, it's rare for TV buzz to translate to movie buzz, so it's not one of those things that happens all the time. He's great here, but so not ing.

Best ing Actress:
01. Felicity Jones — Stunning work in her final scene. She almost steals the movie from Brody and Pearce.
02. Zoe Saldaña — Look, the material isn't good enough, but she single-handedly elevates the movie.
03. Ariana Grande — Given that I've generally found her quite offputting, it is a miracle that she's genuinely endearing here.
04. Monica Barbaro — Great screen presence, she has a bright future. I'm not sure if she was better than Elle Fanning in A Complete Unknown though.
05. Isabella Rossellini — Yeah, her scene is neat.

Prediction: There's one Oscar that I'm not mad about Emilia Pérez winning and it's for Zoe Saldaña. That is, unless the backlash catches up with her...

Best Original Screenplay:
01. The Brutalist — It's like they took all my favourite themes and put them in a blender.
02. A Real Pain — Very well structured and sensitive. It's like the old school Sundance movies we used to get 20 years ago.
03. Anora — Strong but too fragmented. I agree with the complaints that it spins its wheels a bit in the middle and doesn't give us enough of Ani's soul.
04. The Substance — Coralie really threw every she had idea at the wall and kept all the hits and misses. Points for the execution of the core concept. There's a few themes in here that really resonated with me.
05. September 5 — It feels like something that was probably better on the page than on the screen but it's hardly remarkable at that either. When will Scott Feinberg apologize for ruining its reputation by forcing it as a Best Picture frontrunner? Advocate for a movie you love if you wish, but you look like a fool when you're this out of touch.

Prediction: I want to say The Brutalist as part of its Best Picture package but it's really not gaining enough steam in that area. Anora seems right but I'm not certain enough to deviate yet since this has only really operated as a consolation prize recently. I need a precursor before I make a call.

Best Adapted Screenplay:
01. Sing Sing — I'm not really ionate about this one but this is clearly the strongest of a very weak lineup.
02. Nickel Boys — I've heard it's a really interesting adaptation but I did find it either too on-the-nose or cryptic, as if the style is covering up some issues. It may grow on me on a rewatch. I'm happy it's here either way.
03. Conclave — I call it a nap movie because it's so unchallenging and predictable that you can snooze through any 20 minutes and follow it perfectly.
04. A Complete Unknown — Did not do enough.
05. Emilia Pérez — Give us a break.

Prediction: It looks like it's safe to call this for Conclave which is kind of annoying but makes sense. I don't think this can be it's lynchpin to Best Picture, not unless it wins PGA or SAG.

Best Film Editing:
01. The Brutalist — I'm really glad it secured this nom since it was expected to miss. It's not the film's strongest element but I do like that it reminds you there's a hand behind its cuts.
02. Anora — Sure!
03. Wicked — Okay yeah.
04. Conclave — Hmm.
05. Emilia Pérez — Ugh.

Prediction: Gonna be cynical and say that Emilia Pérez wins this for having the 'Most Editing'. That's how this category usually goes.

Best Cinematography:
01. The Brutalist — Am I voting for The Brutalist in every category because it deserves it? You bet I am. It's been a weak decade for cinematography noms and this is my clear favourite so far, whether it's in IMAX, 70mm or D.
02. Nosferatu — Classic Robert Eggers atmosphere. His films should get in every year.
03. Emilia Pérez — Look, I actually really liked a few of the shots. I think it's what's resonated with the film industry at large too. It's confident and rough around the edges.
04. Dune: Part Two — The fan favourite I know but it didn't do much for me compared to the first Dune. Just very dry. I'm parched.
05. Maria — I don't understand this lone nod. Usually Pablo Larraín movies deserve it, but this was like a perfume commercial.

Prediction: Even on The Brutalist's worst day, it should pick up a few of the significant techies.

Best Costume Design:
01. Wicked — I know, the dreaded cinematography, etc. You can still tell the costumes are good!
02. Nosferatu — Yeah.
03. Gladiator II — Sure.
04. A Complete Unknown — Cool.
05. Conclave — I guess.

Prediction: That'll be one for Wicked.

Best Production Design:
01. The Brutalist — Judy Becker is László Toth.
02. Wicked – Good studio work.
03. Dune: Part Two — Okay.
04. Nosferatu – From what you can see.
05. Conclave — Uh.

Prediction: And two for Wicked.

Best Makeup & Hairstyling:
01. A Different Man — When I first saw it, I forgot it was Sebastian Stan in the first act. I had to watch it again to absorb it properly. Very glad this got in. Voters who watch it will regret not including it elsewhere.
02. The Substance — Really really cool.
03. Nosferatu — Haha gross.
04. Wicked — She's green!
05. Emilia Pérez — Not really sure what this is for.

Prediction: Rooting for The Substance hype. I'm not certain it carries Demi Moore to a win but I'm not against that pairing either.

Best Visual Effects:
01. Better Man — Delighted to see this as part of the nominees. Did he need to be a monkey? I do not know. Am I glad he's portrayed a monkey? Also don't know. Would love this to Godzilla Minus One its way to a win.
02. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes — What's almost as good as one monkey? Lots of monkeys.
03. Dune: Part Two — Nice worm, bro.
04. Alien: Romulus — Would consider placing it higher if it wasn't for the unfortunate deepfake.
05. Wicked — A little bit too MCU but I suppose that's fine for here.

Prediction: I'd be a fool to bet against Dune: Part Two.

Best Sound:
01. Dune: Part Two — Love your worm, dude.
02. A Complete Unknown — The Bob Dylan songs were the best part of the movie.
03. Wicked — That's right, it's a musical.
04. The Wild Robot — Hard to begrudge the nom.
05. Emilia Pérez — Maybe not the worst, but it's Emilia Pérez, so...

Prediction: Feels like it's part of the evening where we get really worried about Emilia Pérez sweeping.

Best Original Score:
01. The Brutalist – Stirring stunning work. Quite possibly my favourite of the decade in general.
02. Conclave — Good stuff, it tried its best to keep me awake.
03. The Wild Robot — Works better on its own, much too treacly with the film.
04. Wicked — Cinematic!
05. Emilia Pérez — Not that bad but yeah.

Prediction: Even on The Brutalist's absolute worst day, it should pick this up. I when this used to be a consolation win, so I wouldn't be too mad if it happened this way in the end. It's too good for the Oscars.

Best Original Song:
01. Sing Sing — Clearly the best one here, I'm glad they swung Sing Sing another nomination even if it should've been in some above the line categories.
02. Elton John: Never Too Late — It's never too late for nowww!!
03. The Six Triple Eight — Oh Diane.
04. Emilia Pérez (‘Mi Camino’) — Honestly a half-decent pop song.
05. Emilia Pérez (‘El Mal’) — Embarrassing.

Prediction: El Mal obviously has the momentum. Winning only this is also Emilia Pérez's absolute worst day. And we'd love to see it! (derogatory)

Best Animated Feature:
01. Memoir of a Snail — Justice for Mary and Max! Though I'm glad Adam Elliot already has an Oscar, it gives me some relief.
02. Inside Out 2 — The rare time I'm rooting for a Pixar sequel as a spoiler. It really got to me.
03. Flow — Though this winning would be wonderful.
04. The Wild Robot — I found this way too cloying and on-the-nose.
05. Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl — I was supposed to love this but it just didn't work for me at all.

Prediction: Perhaps it's not locked up for The Wild Robot but I'll prime myself for a nice surprise if it isn't.

Best Documentary Feature:
01. No Other Land — I had a feeling this would either win or be a controversial miss. It's clearly the doc of the year any way you slice it.
02. Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat — Very well crafted doc.
03. Sugarcane — Worthy of a nom.
04. Black Box Diaries — Good for her.
05. Porcelain War — Way too surface level.

Prediction: I thought that Daughters would be a spoiler so since it didn't make the cut, it's gotta be No Other Land. I don't know how it'll vibe in the room after The Zone of Interest last year so we'll see.

Best International Feature:
01. The Seed of the Sacred Fig — I wish this still had the potential to win.
02. I'm Still Here — I'm very glad it has the potential to win.
03. Flow — Latvia mentioned!
04. The Girl with the Needle — Should've been in Best Cinematography as well.
05. Emilia Pérez — Get out of here.

Prediction: I'd love to hopedict I'm Still Here, and it's an unprecedented year where we have two nominees also in the Best Picture lineup which previously made this category easy, so I'm bracing myself for Emilia Pérez to take this as expected.

My predicted tally of wins on the day of nominations:
• The Brutalist – 5
• Emilia Pérez – 5
• Wicked – 2
• Anora – 1
• Conclave – 1
• Dune: Part Two – 1
I'm Still Here – 1
• No Other Land – 1
• A Real Pain – 1
The Substance – 1
The Wild Robot – 1

I'll be back before Oscar Sunday for a final round of predictions and fine-tuned rankings.

Post-BAFTA update: Okay, I overpredicted The Brutalist and Emilia Pérez and didn't expect Anora's comeback like that. To be honest, I'm not very invested in this year's Oscars so I'm trying not to overthink all the different angles. I think Anora is basically locked now after its near-guild sweep (pending SAG). I don't think either The Brutalist or Conclave are a realistic threat at this point. The big question is how many Oscars does Anora win, it could be anything from 2–5. So, here's where I'm at two weeks before the Oscars.

Picture: Anora
Director: Brady Corbet, The Brutalist
Actor: Adrien Brody, The Brutalist
Actress: Mikey Madison, Anora
Supp. Actor: Kieran Culkin, A Real Pain
Supp. Actress: Zoe Saldaña, Emilia Pérez
O. Screenplay: Anora
A. Screenplay: Conclave
Cinematography: The Brutalist
Film Editing: Anora
Production Design: Wicked
Costume Design: Wicked
Makeup & Hairstyling: The Substance
Visual Effects: Dune: Part Two
Sound: Dune: Part Two
Original Score: The Brutalist
Original Song: ‘El Mal’, Emilia Pérez
Animated Feature: The Wild Robot
Documentary Feature: No Other Land
International Feature: Emilia Pérez

So now that's four for Anora, four for The Brutalist, three for Emilia Pérez and two for Wicked and Dune: Part Two. I'm not certain about predicting a split, but I'd rather just be wrong. Film Editing is difficult but I'm trying not to overthink it, even if it means Sean Baker gets a real armful of statues. I'm very tempted to try for Flow and I'm Still Here for animated and international, but I'm just reg myself to the consensus picks for now.

Final score: 13/20

This is my same score as last year (counting from my day of nominations predix). I had a feeling about Flow and I'm Still Here pulling minor upsets but wasn't feeling ready to make that call. I was pretty sold on Anora by the end, it saved its best night for last, but my gut feeling on Brady Corbet was definitely wrong.

  1. The Brutalist
  2. A Different Man
  3. Memoir of a Snail
  4. A Real Pain
  5. Anora
  6. Better Man
  7. Nickel Boys
  8. Inside Out 2
  9. The Seed of the Sacred Fig
  10. I'm Still Here
