The Appointment

1982

Remarkable. A cursed lost film that I wish had been properly restored. An astounding use of basic montage. Somewhat of a proto Twin Peaks –– there are images and ideas that are so close to the Lynch, yet there is no way he saw this movie. Ought to be enshrined in the horror canon. Pity we didn't see more from Lindsey Vickers.

Can we talk for a minute about how Kerr Smith is supposed to be this aggressive jock but all he ever listens to is electro pop or industrial? Or how nobody thinks it’s weird that everybody in town is named after a famous horror icon?

The female lead’s name is Clear River, and for most of the running time, she’s like the anti-manic pixie dream girl in that although she exists fully to our “hero,” she is absolutely, positively…

all-time great horror premise which understands that most of us are more likely to get done in by poorly designed urban infrastructure and cheaply made household goods than we are a guy with an axe

We’re doing paganism, we’re doing cannibalism, we’re doing spring/summer, we’re doing the smoky eye, we’re doing centaurs, we’re doing cave dwelling, it’s giving stalker, it’s giving full frontal, it’s male, it’s slutty, we’re doing statement jewelry, we’re doing headpieces, we’re doing codpieces, we’re doing revenge, we’re doing thievery, pottery, the golden fleece. Have you heard of her? Everybody wants her. It’s all about her. We crave her, we demand her, we reach out for her. Sexual tension!
