Pee-wee's Big Adventure

1985

★★★½ Liked

I watched this after watching Paul Reuben’s documentary on HBO and it honestly was a rough watch, not because of the film itself, but by knowing the amount of suffering this man had due to his talent.

Improv/Method acting is in its own lane. Reuben’s became Pee Wee, to the point of neglecting himself - for the sake of art, for the sake of making others laugh - and there’s something so twisted yet beautiful in that.

The fact this was Tim Burtons directorial debut makes so much sense. The set design is wacky, the characters blur the line of mature vs childlike, and the story is simple yet impactful.

RIP Paul Reubens/Pee Wee Herman - thank you for all the laughs
