This year's Dundead festival is fast approaching and we can't wait to welcome you for four days filled with the best new and vintage titles. 2m1w5j

There's two UK premieres, four Scottish premieres and six retrospective titles to look forward to. You've been snapping up our festival es - if you haven't got one already, head here to find out more and book.

And as if all that wasn't enticing enough, we've been working behind-the-scenes to add even more horror fun to the festival. We're excited to welcome some special guests and we've added some exciting (and terrifying!) short films to our programme. Take a look...

The Evolution of Horror 2g6n10

We're very excited to be welcoming the hosts of the award-winning podcast The Evolution of Horror to introduce two of our retrospective titles.

Launched in 2017, The Evolution of Horror is one of the most successful horror and film history podcasts. Episodes drop weekly and explore the history of the horror genre, from silent cinema to modern classics, via different subgenres.

Mike Muncer, film journalist, host and creator of The Evolution of Horror will be introducing our captioned screening Zombie Flesh Eaters on Friday night. And on Sunday, co-host and writer Becky Darke will be introducing our screening of Mario Bava's Black Sunday They'll also be sharing their experience of the festival - say hello and make them feel welcome.

Short scares 1ak38

Whet your appetite for our features with our specially selected short films. Before five of our festival films, you'll be treated to a short scare that was inspired by or speaks to the themes of the film it precedes.

Ahead of Deep Red will be Bath Bomb an outrageously entertaining, blackly comic queer homage to the giallo aesthetic, directed by Colin G Cooper. We're thrilled that Colin will be ing us all the way from Canada to introduce his film and share the ways in which Deep Red inspired it. Colin says:

Deep Red is the film that first sparked my desire to create queer Giallo, which directly led to the development of Bath Bomb. Bath Bomb would not exist without Deep Red, and I'm beyond excited that the two films are screening together at Dundead.

Screening with our Scottish premiere of Somnium is Izzy, a brilliantly snappy short by Yfke van Berckelaer in which one young woman’s bottled-up frustrations reach fever pitch.

We've already shared our pairing of the Quay Brothers short of Street of Crocodiles with their new feature Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass but we're now delighted to share that this 1986 short will be screening in glorious 35mm!

Then, showing with our Scottish premiere of The Wailing is Skulk, an extremely creepy short from UK-based filmmaker Max Ward. DCA staff were treated to a preview of this and described it as "incredibly unsettling and so, so effective" and "the perfect combo to make me jump out of my skin".

And last but certainly not least, we'll be showing the UK premiere of Mary Elizabeth Ellis’ short Last to Leave, a freaky debut about last orders being called in an American bar, ahead of our closing film, Demons.

Enjoy a Dundead drink 5b1242

We're thrilled that Dundead IPA, our collaboration with Holy Goat, will be available on tap in Jute Café Bar throughout the festival. Find out more about it here. Jute are also putting on a special Dundead themed cocktail and mocktail too, so there's something for all tastes. Sip on a Crimson Waltz, a gin-based cocktail inspired by Suspiria, or enjoy a Scream Colada mocktail, inspired by A Bay of Blood. Show your Dundead ticket at the bar to get a discount on your special Dundead drink.

It's going to be a busy weekend, but we've made sure there's time between films to enjoy a drink and a chat with your fellow festival-goers. You can also take your drinks into the cinema - just make sure you ask for a reusable glass - and you'll be able to pre-order so there's a beverage waiting for you when you come out of the cinema, ready for your next screening. We'll be sending out more details to bookers, so keep an eye on your inbox.
We can't wait to see you in the cinema!

Films we're looking forward to in 2025 k343 https://letterboxd.cinevost.com/dcacinema/story/films-were-looking-forward-to-in-2025/ letterboxd-story-32496 Thu, 30 Jan 2025 00:46:05 +1300 <![CDATA[

We're all set for another bumper year of films at DCA, with blockbuster releases including Mickey 17ElioMission: Impossible: The Final Reckoning, and of course Wicked: For Goodheading our way, as well as plenty of fantastic independent titles from around the world, fresh from the film festival circuit.

We asked David Nixon, DCA's Head of Cinema, and Michael Coull, our Cinema Programme Assistant and Dundead programmer, which films they're most looking forward to in 2025…

David Nixon, Head of Cinema 6i5p1a

There are two important political thrillers from across the world coming out this spring that I want to highlight. Firstly, Mohammad Rasoulof’s The Seed of the Sacred Fig, a tense and paranoid film in which a family’s division during the 2022 student protests echoes the tensions in Iranian society.

And secondly, I’m Still Here, which is set during the military dictatorship in Brazil in the early 1970s and features a powerhouse performance from Fernanda Torres as a mother trying to keep her family together while searching for her husband.

I also want to put Scottish-set On Falling on your radar. Directed by newcomer Laura Carreira and produced by the team behind Ken Loach’s films, this poignant drama focuses on a Portuguese woman’s struggles with loneliness and alienation in the gig-economy climate.

Lastly, I’m excited to see if 28 Years Later lives up to the first film in the series, coming this summer…

Michael Coull, Cinema Programme Assistant and Dundead programmer 6d2k2j

In an age where we increasingly seem to know more and more details about a film’s production and plot before it’s even released, any film which manages to maintain an air of secrecy and anticipation is always interesting. Enter Ryan Coogler’s Sinners – releasing in March.

The trailer is atmospheric and cryptic, it reunites Coogler with his muse Michael B Jordan (star of many of Coogler’s pictures, from Fruitvale Station to Black Pantherto Creed) this also looks like it will be the first time that Coogler turns his unique sensibilities to the horror genre. I can’t wait.

Further off (and even more mysterious) are The Bride! Maggie Gyllenhaal’s intriguing-sounding adaptation of Bride of Frankenstein with Jessie Buckley as the titular Bride; Mother Mary, the always iconoclastic David Lowery’s new Anne Hathaway musical (tunes courtesy of Charli XCX and Jack Antonoff); and this year should see the eagerly-awaited release of the Jordan-Peele-produced sports-themed horror Him with Julia Fox and a comeback performance from Marlon Wayans.

Finally, Julia Ducournau is one of my favourite filmmakers working today and there’s a chance we could see her latest film, Alpha, released this year.

Thank you David and Michael! Which films are you most excited for? We'd love to check our your lists on Letterboxd - tag us in your lists, reviews and stories.

Don’t miss Academy Award frontrunner The Brutalist, arriving at DCA this week. This period drama features a stunning performance from Adrien Brody as Hungarian-born Jewish architect László Tóth, who moves to the USA in 1947 to rebuild his life and career.

We love Christmas films! To celebrate this year's fantastic festive film programme at DCA Cinema, we asked the DCA team about their must-watch favourites. Be sure to tell us about your favourite Christmas films too – tag us on Instagram or share your Letterboxd lists.

3w54v

"You can't beat a snowy, bittersweet, old black and white film during the holidays," says Val, our Exhibitions Coordinator, "I never get sick of It's A Wonderful Life and The Apartment."

Kay, also on the Exhibitions team, brings us a brand-new festive favourite for 2024: "I have been waiting all year to watch The Holdovers again – it totally captures the feeling around Christmas, and the cast of misfits is so endearing."

"I love the spectacle of White Christmas, but The Muppet Christmas Carol is unironically my favourite festive watch. The beautiful costumes and sets plus Muppet mayhem and Michael Caine in a musical late-career high… magic," says Jenny from our Comms team.

We have a few darker Christmas films on our list too. Faith from our People Team says "
Die Hard – definitely a Christmas movie" while Communications Manager Meg adds "The Nightmare Before Christmas – and it is 100% a Christmas film!"

Of course, we had to expect that our Dundead programmer Michael Coull would select something deliciously dark for us –

"The 1974 Black Christmas – not only the best Christmas horror film ever made, but also one of the best and earliest examples of the slasher film, it set the template for the future of the subgenre. Come see our 50th anniversary screening this Friday 20 December."

Love this? Check out our line-up of Christmas films at DCA Cinema, showing until Tue 24 December.

With Oscar season looming, it's the time of year when some of cinema's most acclaimed filmmakers release new features, and we're thrilled to bring you films from three great UK directors this month – Steve McQueen, Andrea Arnold and Ridley Scott.

Steve McQueen 2h552q

Steve McQueen is back with Blitz, showing now at DCA Cinema. After an early career as a Turner Prize-winning video artist, McQueen went on to direct HungerShame12 Years a SlaveWidows, the TV anthology Small Axe and more. Among a slew of awards, he was the first Black filmmaker to win an Academy Award in 2014.

Of Blitz, he has said "I think my movie — not to sound corny — it’s about love. That’s the only thing worth living for, and it’s only thing worth dying for. Nothing else. That’s what I wanted to illuminate."

Andrea Arnold d4v1m

Following Cannes Film Festival award-winner American Honey and the compelling 2021 documentary Cow, Andrea Arnold, makes a welcome return with Bird, a tender, striking and surprising coming-of-age fable starring Barry Keoghan (Saltburn), Franz Rogowski (ages), and newcomer Nykiya Adams.

For Bird, Arnold wanted to look at the experience of a teenager being raised by a young single father fixated on a bizarre money making scheme. "How do you navigate when you’re in the world where everything around you is so completely chaotic? How do you do that?" – there's more insight into her filmmaking process in this fantastic interview with Little White Lies.

Ridley Scott 6oq5

We end November with the latest feature from Ridley Scott, legendary director of dozens of blockbuster hits including AlienBlade RunnerBlack Hawk DownPrometheus and last year's Napoleon.

Now, Scott brings us the long-awaited sequel to the Oscar-winning GladiatorGladiator II. This new film continues the epic saga of power, intrigue, and vengeance set in Ancient Rome and stars Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal and Denzel Washington.
