Nicolas’s review published on Letterboxd:
This year’s choice for Halloween night 👻 🎃
A totally absurd film that I did not know what to make of it:
On one side, is the relentless barrage of horror sequences which would have been terrifying if it wasn’t for the laughable aesthetics of the special effects, whilst on the other side, it is genuine laugh out loud humour which feels too funny to belong in this type of film.
The script is in itself is rough, patchy and rudimentary and the acting is questionable in a sense that on the face of it is not good, yet it is memorable and fits completely with the film’s vibes. This feels even more bizarre considering this is much more of a remake of the original Evil Dead as opposed to a sequel and given many of the same stakeholders were still involved, I would have expected something much more refined.
Nevertheless, one thing that I could not stop noticing though is the effect this film may have had in other movies and vice versa: I could see a little of the Fight Club, Cabin in The Woods, Shawn of the Dead, and more recently Studio 666 among others, whilst I could see it borrowing from Addams Family character Thing, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Poltergeist and so many more.
All in all, more fun that one may have expected from a horror film and less scary than one would have feared, is not a bad recipe after all.
