"Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" really does feel like a play in the best sense and I enjoyed this a lot more than I was expecting too. I didn't love everywhere the plot went but it's still got a great script, strong direction and terrific production design that really transports you back to 1927. Viola Davis, Colman Domingo, Glynn Turman and Taylour Paige are all excellent in their roles but the real standout is Chadwick Boseman (R.I.P.). He truly is fantastic and his monologues heartbreaking. Even though this movie is pretty great on it's own, it's worth seeing just to see Chadwick Boseman's brilliant final performance alone.
