I’m really taken aback by how much I enjoyed this on rewatch. Parts of the movie that I already liked before (the airport cat & mouse chase, the entire Rome section, the Orient Express etc.) only got better on rewatch, while the stylistic decisions that didn't work for me initially mostly clicked this time around. I still prefer McQuarrie's more classical approach to filmmaking in Fallout and especially Rogue Nation but I really came around to his wild camera direction here, it's genuinely electric at times. I think the film peaks during the Venice sequence and the gradual build-up to Ilsa's death with Ethan running faster than he ever did to Lorne Balfe's deafening score is one of the best moments in the series, I haven't been able to get it out of my head since. Really glad I had the opportunity to revisit this film on the big screen right before The Final Reckoning.

I feel at odds with this movie. I love a lot of what Dan Mindel is doing here and his experience from working on Tony Scott movies really comes through (but is actively undermined by Abrams' direction). Such a punchy and textured image. Ethan Hunt feels like an actual character maybe for the first time in the series and this movie establishes the formula that future movies would build on moving forward in many ways. Not much to say about Philip Seymour Hoffman's performance that hasn't been said, best villain of the series and it’s not even close. 

What keeps this film from being great is J.J. Abrams in his painfully obvious feature debut. There are so many sequences in this film that are fantastic on paper but absolutely fall flat on their face because of his direction. The flashing lights in the first helicopter set-piece nearly gave me an aneurysm. The Shanghai sequence has some great moments but the whole thing is undermined by his neurotic camerawork and framing choices. I genuinely don't know what he was thinking with this. The only set-piece that truly worked for me from start to finish was the Vatican infiltration, great stuff.

This was the first Tom & Jerry short I saw as a kid and it’s still one of my favorites. I love Tom’s design and animation in this one and it's probably one of their most relentlessly paced shorts. Nostalgia aside though, I can't deny that some aspects have aged a bit and it's very easy to see why this won an Oscar in 1943 (derogatory in this case).

Kinda one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen? This came out in the 40s but it tackles a tale that is apparently as old as time itself: wanting to kill oneself upon seeing a beautiful woman.

Maybe *the* example of how limitations (self-imposed in this case) can often breed greatness. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a movie that weaponizes the digital format to this degree, it uses the inherent weaknesses of a MiniDV camera to create such a unique texture. It's only a limitation on paper in a way because the weight of the camera and the refusal to use any studio lighting results in camerawork that feels truly unleashed, so wild and unconstrained. Vinterberg is also just a master at mixing different tones, just like Another Round, this film could effortlessly take me from laughing at the absurdity of the characters (Thomas Bo Larsen might be my favorite collaborator of his) to completely taking my breath away during the scenes at the dinner table. Such a dense and chaotic picture.

I’ve always loved Heat but something about this 3rd viewing genuinely hit like crack and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it in the days since. Countless great scenes to to name, but one that truly hit me this time around was Charlene waving off Chris. We barely even see the two showing love to one another throughout the movie but something about that goodbye was so heartbreaking. There is such a romantic quality to the way Mann marries his images with music but the true greatness of that particular scene is how much love and heartbreak these two actors were able to convey simultaneously just through looking at each other. RIP Val Kilmer.

The most efficiently paced superhero movie. This thing just flies by and yet every narrative beat clicks so well that it feels borderline effortless. Such a fantastic screenplay. I also think this is one of the few Pixar movies where the art department really struck a near-perfect balance between stylized character designs and photorealism. Sure, it has aged in some areas (mainly the skin textures and background characters) but the direction and editing are so solid that it doesn't matter. Not much to say about Giacchino's score, it speaks for itself. This film is always such a pleasure to revisit, just endlessly rewatchable.

One of the best pilot episodes ever. Does everything it sets out to do so well and it establishes such a unique tone and atmosphere, there's really nothing like it. Best way I can describe it is to imagine what David Lynch's take on a soap opera would be like.

Can't wait to revisit the rest of this season.

Been a long time since I had such a blast watching a film. Fires on all cylinders from the very first scene all the way to the last. Every chase scene in this film had me salivating like a dog and Jimbo's insistence on making some of the best third acts in movie history is here in full force. Nearly stood up from my couch and cheered when Arnold started blasting T-1000 through the truck's windshield. Cameron is also just such a master at writing simple and yet effective emotional beats, the ending works so well and it kinda hits you out of nowhere. His screenplays are always so classically satisfying, everything just clicks. One of the best to ever fucking do it and I will be doing tricks on the IMAX seat later this year when he brings me back to Pandora.

What a directorial debut. Such a beautiful blend of cel animation & CGI that somehow tackles Cold War paranoia and militarism while still being just a really solid & fun kids film about friendship and empathy. Brad Bird is one of my favorite American filmmakers, I think.

First rewatch in nearly a decade and like with the previous entries, my opinion on this film hasn't really changed much since. It's comfortably the weakest film in the trilogy. Marquand does a fine job directing but he's no match for Lucas' & Taylor's gorgeous scope compositions in the first film nor the dynamic blocking and lighting by Kershner & Suschitzky in Empire. It's also the one entry that I feel has aged the most since 1983 because of its heavier use of CGI, although credit must be given to the space battles in this film, the part where the rebellion squad flies into the core of the Death Star might be the trilogy's best flying sequence. For being the grand finale of the trilogy, it also has surprisingly little drive to it, it really sags in the middle. Thankfully, it manages to stick the landing in its third act and the final duel between Vader & Luke features some of John Williams' best work to date. And despite all of the pacing and structural issues, it's still fun all the way through. These films are so wonderfully simple and silly in all the right ways. 

The 4K83 fan restoration of this film is probably the best one of the three, beautiful stuff. So glad this project exists.
